The Best Golf Lesson You Never Heard

Here’s me, focusing ONLY on the distance from my eyes to the golf ball.

Have you ever wondered how a professional golfer can step up to a golf ball and execute so flawlessly time after time, with apparently ZERO swing thoughts? I have and I think I have something that will help any struggling golfer.

Paramount to a good golf swing is ensuring that your head does not raise up in your backswing. There are several ways to approach this. You can think about holding your spine angle as you swing back. You can think about keeping your head level. And you can try what has worked the best for me. I like to think about the distance from my eyes to the golf ball and ensure that the distance remains constant as I get my swing underway.

Why do I think this is the best approach? There are several reasons. First, I believe that focusing on your spine angle or keeping your head level is very distracting from the task at hand, which is putting a good, free swing on the ball. I also think it can inject tension and hurt your swing. I find that when I focus on the distance from my eyes to the ball, it does not distract from the task at hand. And I find that I completely ignore my swing altogether. I just do what feels natural with zero concern or even any awareness of what I am doing. I end up with good golf swings and I play very consistently.

And there is something else I believe about this process. I believe that it works so well because your focus on the distance to the ball, instead of focusing on physical processes like your spine angle or keeping a level head, enables your brain to unconsciously direct your body to get that club on that golf ball in the best manner possible. And I think that is the closest thing you can get to the original question of how a pro golfer can execute so flawlessly with seemingly so little mental effort.

So I hope you will give it a try. Set up to the ball as you normally do. Turn your focus to the ball and ensure that you keep the distance from your eyes to the golf ball the same as you get your backswing underway. You might just find this is the best golf lesson you never heard.
